Music Technology and Education

In today’s digital world, technology is playing a major role in how children learn and engage with music. What began as simple online communication has grown into powerful learning platforms where students can explore music creation, performance, and collaboration—no matter where they are.

This shift, often called the Open Learning Revolution (Price, 2013), is transforming music education. As Bauer (2014) notes, technology includes the tools and methods we use to achieve goals—like learning an instrument, composing music, or participating in virtual ensembles. For parents, this means your child can access creative, interactive, and highly personalized music experiences that support both their musical growth and their confidence—whether they’re learning at home or in the classroom.

  "My own musical training began decades ago in the classical tradition. I learned to play the clarinet, an instrument first developed in the early 18th century that remains largely unchanged today, aside from minor technological refinements in key mechanisms. My education centered on classical repertoire and theory, with progress assessed through in-person exams and live performances at concerts and events. However, when I later took up the electric guitar (an instrument rooted in late 1960s innovation), I quickly realized how deeply intertwined it was with electronics and modern technology. The music theory I had learned only partially applied; much of contemporary playing required entirely new concepts, which were, at the time, unfamiliar territory for me. “ (Miro)

Amplifying Musicality Through Technology

Andrew Brown’s Music Technology and Education: Amplifying Musicality (2015) highlights how technology supports musical creativity and learning. The book explores tools like Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), MIDI, and audio editing—showing how they’re used in both teaching and performance.

It also covers the creative process, live and digital presentations, and how online platforms have transformed music education by offering access to resources, lessons, and collaboration around the world. The final section shows how technology helps schools and educators manage music programs more efficiently—benefiting both teachers and students.

Modern Curriculum with Technology

"For my electric guitar and music theory lessons, I use the Rockschool™ and Trinity Pop & Rock™ (UK) syllabi—respected exam boards that embrace technology in music education. These programs have evolved from printed books to digital resources with instant downloads and backing tracks, making learning more flexible, engaging, and accessible." (Miro)

The latest innovation was introducing the ‘Learning Platform’, the online application that supplies many educational values for learners in one package, such as:

* music sheets and audio backing tracks,
* interaction between learners and teachers on one place,
* possibility for learners to record their songs interpretation and being AI evaluated (with ease for submitting recordings to teachers on one place),
* possibility for teachers to make audio and video record instructions and making it available to students in one place,
* online lessons in the protected online music room,
* all recordings are cloud based (no need for ‘memory sticks’, etc),
* grade examination enrolling,
* grading can be done as uploading the video into the Platform etc.

The Learning Platform increased efficiency of music teaching, so that learners could achieve higher grades in shorter period of time.
